Reflections on Communicating Visually

One of my professors gave us the task of using images to tell others about who we are. We had to choose two words from this word list that describe our personality and take a still photo to illustrate each of them.

Kind
Relaxed
Creative
Outgoing
Confident
Helpful
Happy
Ambitious
Sociable
Distracted
Friendly
Sympathetic
Shy
Manly
Messy
Organized
Bored
Energetic
Girlie
Quirky
Neat
Enthusiastic
Athletic
Industrious
Grouchy
Intelligent
Old
Courageous
Cooperative
Comical

Here is the first photo that I submitted. I submitted this photo in lieu of another one. Which characteristic from the above word list do you think it illustrates?

I found this assignment to be more challenging than I expected. It was hard narrowing the list down to just two words to describe myself. I’m versatile and there are so many sides to my personality.  Honestly, I am pretty sure I would have used different words if I only could have figured out how to illustrate them with still pictures that made sense. Next time, I would try to think of all of the ways that I could represent a word with pictures. Figuring out how to represent words using only still shots was a challenge, especially when I could readily bring action shots to mind.

I spent almost an hour in one location taking pictures only to decide that I didn’t like most of them when I got home. I noticed that I spent a lot of time trying to get the shot just the way I wanted it. I never realized how much effort went into taking a good picture.

I second-guessed my photos a few times and changed words because the pictures I took made sense to me, but I wasn’t sure if the words that I chose would be as clear to my peers. I asked some friends to look at the photos and tell me what words came to mind when they looked at them. That helped me decide which ones made the most sense. I completely scrapped one word and switched it out because I didn’t think my message would be understood. I’m not totally satisfied with the replacement, but the photo does indirectly refer to a major part of my personality.

I really enjoyed looking at the pictures that my peers posted. Reading the comments and feedback that everyone left on each other’s photos really shows how an image could be interpreted different ways by different people, simply based on our prior experiences. I think that made me feel better about what images I used in my still shots. I wanted to choose nail polish, files, nail jewels and a finished manicure to illustrate my creative side, but someone else might have interpreted those as “girly” and I am far from that!

This is the photo that I nixed. Which characteristic from the above word list do you think it illustrates? Do you think I was right to substitute it out or do you think I should have kept it?
